IMITATE - Immersive Test Environment for Guidance Systems

Leading Question

Modern transport infrastructures fulfill multiple functions. It becomes more difficult to design control systems in a simple and clear way, and to efficiently direct the flow of people.
Recently, manufacturers are increasingly developing dynamic, mobile control systems. They can be situation-adapted to the individual needs. In recent years the research and product development has created the prerequisite technical implementation of such systems. The question of how each addressed group is using or accepting them has moved more and more into focus.
The research project IMITATE creates a controlled test environment. In the future this represents an essential planning tool to develop customized control systems. In addition many more issues will be analyzed by IMITATE.

Our Contribution

Fraunhofer Austria extended the immersive virtual environment DAVE, developed at Graz University of Technology to create a controlled test environment. DAVE is a square room of 3 m side length, in which the test person can move around. Within IMITATE other pedestrians, soundscapes, realistic lighting and new navigation concepts are included into the DAVE and thus extends its realism.

Your Benefit

Large construction projects require good planning in many areas. The test environment developed in "IMITATE" allows for various aspects to be tested already in the planning phase. These aspects include for example guidance systems but also appearance and perception that can be realistically evaluated in the virtual world.

Partners and Funding

Under the direction of the AIT Mobility Department the project is realized by ÖBB Infrastructure Ltd, Komobile Gmunden, Im-plan-tat Reinberg and partners OG and the Merten GmbH. Fraunhofer Austria contributes its know-how in the Visual Computing.
